The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the John Day Dam in 1958. When it was completed in 1971, at a total cost of $511 million, the John Day Dam Powerhouse was the second largest in the world. Completion of the dam marked the final step in harnessing the lower waters of the Columbia River.
