The unusual sculptural shape of the Fermilab's central lab building was achieved with reinforced concrete. Its richly textured surface was created by using fiberglass forms in which wood planks of random widths and lengths had been cast. At the time of its construction in 1971-74, this was the largest application of this technology in the Midwest.

With a free entry ticket to Fermilab's Wilson Hall, you can explore the world of quantum mechanics.
Hours of Operation: Open daily 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Need a map?
Fermilab operates the world's highest-energy particle accelerator, the Tevatron, and the world's only hadron collider. (Hadrons are subatomic particles made up of quarks. Quarks, along with leptons, are the elementary particles of matter.) The scientific research conducted here has involved not only dramatic discoveries, such as that of the sixth, and possibly last, quark, but also important engineering applications, such as the effect of strong bursts of electromagnetic energy on missile guidance systems. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the lab (Robert Rathbun Wilson Hall) which has one of the world's largest atriums.

Who Made It: The construction team was known as DUSAF, a joint venture of DMJM, architects and engineers, Los Angeles; the office of Max O. Urbahn, architects, New York; Seelye, Stevenson, Value & Knecht, consulting engineers, New York; and the George A. Fuller Company, contractors, New York.
