Without the development of modern electronics based on miniaturized transistor circuitry, space exploration would have been practically impossible. Even on manned missions, maneuvering the spacecraft requires the rapid calculation and response available only through electronic logic devices.

Space Center Houston is the official Visitors Center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, the home of astronaut training and Mission Control. Described as the "closest thing to space on Earth," the facility was created to show students that working hard in math and science classes could pay off with a career as an aerospace engineer or astronaut. Self-guided, interactive attractions include computers to simulate retrieving a satellite and experience how astronauts function in space. Among the realistically displayed artifacts are a Mercury capsule, Gemini spacecraft, and an Apollo 17 command module. There's also an IMAX theater and live shows.

Who Made It: A joint venture of CRSS Sirrine and Linbeck headed the construction team. Walt Disney Imagineering generated the initial concepts.
