The arch itself is 309 ft long, three stories high, and weighs 1,500 tons. Assembled next to the Interstate, it was maneuvered into place by Davenport Mammoet LLC of Rosharon, Texas, using 12 self-propelled, modular transporters. The largest object ever to be transported in Nebraska, the arch was moved 270 ft. at a rate of three ft. per minute.

The Great Platte River Road through Nebraska was the grand corridor of America's westward expansion. The Archway Monument commemorates many of the engineering innovations in communication and transportation that shaped the evolution of the route from a wagon trail into the first transcontinental interstate. The monument features two levels of interactive exhibits, which give visitors the sensation of actually taking part in the western migration. Infrared headsets narrate the journey, with true stories from diaries and journals of the pioneers, Pony Express riders, stagecoach passengers, Union Pacific train crews, and others.
